India has secured an agreement to export BrahMos missiles worth Rs. 3,800 crore (US$ 440.27 million) to Indonesia, as reported by News18. India is one of the few nations capable of building aircraft carriers domestically. On January 26, senior officials from Jakarta expressed interest in collaborating with India on aircraft carrier construction during meetings with Indian representatives, according to defence sources. Indian officials are also working to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in shipbuilding.
India has previously supplied BrahMos missiles to the Philippines under a contract worth over Rs. 2,891.39 crore (US$ 335 million). Deliveries are ongoing, with additional shipments expected soon. Countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and several in the Middle East have shown interest in the India-Russia joint venture missile system. During Indonesian President Mr. Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to India from January 23-26, discussions focused on strengthening defence industry cooperation. Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr. Jaideep Mazumdar, highlighted areas of collaboration, including joint exercises, coordination, training exchanges, and maintenance of common platforms. MOUs were signed in five key areas: health, maritime, traditional medicine, digital development, and cultural exchange. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi emphasised that Indonesia is a vital partner in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and Indo-Pacific region, with both nations committed to regional peace, security, and freedom of navigation under international law.
