India has launched the G20 Talent Visa under the Ministry of Home Affairs to position itself as a global academic and technological collaboration hub. This initiative, aligning with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s G20 Summit proposal in September, aims to attract scholars, researchers, and professionals from G20 nations to bolster India’s scientific and educational ecosystem. Categorised under the S-5 student visa sub-category, the visa facilitates entry for individuals engaged in post-doctoral research, academic projects, fellowships, and specialised training programmes, fostering innovation and cross-border collaboration in science, technology, engineering, and academia.

Inspired by international programmes like the UK’s Global Talent Visa, Australia’s Global Talent Visa, and the US O-1 Visa, India’s G20 Talent Visa focuses on high-calibre talent. It enables participants to contribute significantly to India’s academic and technological advancements. The University Grants Commission (UGC) will promote the visa among higher education institutions to maximise awareness and participation. By attracting exceptional talent, this initiative aims to strengthen India’s position in the global academic and technological landscape, driving advancements in critical sectors.
