India, Iran to ink 10-year agreement to manage and operate Chabahar port

India and Iran are on the brink of finalising a long-term agreement for the operation and management of Chabahar Port, with Union Shipping Minister Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal leading negotiations in Tehran. The port, operated by India's India Ports Global, holds strategic importance as a shorter route to Europe than the Suez Canal, potentially accelerating trade between India and European nations.

Recent negotiations have overcome significant hurdles, with agreement on contentious clauses, including arbitration, which had previously stalled discussions. Despite ongoing Lok Sabha elections and the model code of conduct, the shipping minister secured an exemption for the foreign visit, signalling progress toward a more stable framework for investment in Chabahar Port.
