European Commission President Ms. Ursula von der Leyen emphasised the need to strengthen collaboration between New Delhi and Brussels in digital technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and defence, calling India a "pillar of certainty" for Europe in an "increasingly uncertain world." She praised Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s speech at the Paris AI Summit. She highlighted that both regions are working towards making AI a driver of positive change in economies and societies. She also expressed confidence that the next AI Summit hosted by India would be a remarkable success.
During a joint address with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, she underscored AI’s significance in the Trade and Technology Council, mentioning that the European AI Office and India AI Mission have agreed to deepen cooperation in climate change, bioinformatics, and natural hazards. She also stressed enhancing interoperability between India's Aadhaar and the European Union (EU) digital wallet, benefiting nearly two billion citizens. Discussions at Hyderabad House, attended by Indian ministers, focused on strengthening collaboration in semiconductor research and development, secure telecommunication networks, and 6G. She highlighted the need for digital skills and urged increased student and skilled worker exchanges. Addressing security concerns, she reiterated the importance of India-EU cooperation in defence, maritime security, and cyber threats, advocating joint naval exercises and enhanced protection of undersea data cables. Concluding her remarks, she affirmed that India and the EU send a "powerful and positive signal" to the world, reaffirming their commitment to deeper strategic ties.
