The country is fast emerging as the world’s heartbeat for large-scale organic farming, with the government emphasizing India’s farming prowess and expanding the organic farming ecosystem. Commerce Secretary Mr. Rajesh Agrawal has stated his country’s intent to meet the world’s demand for organic food while strengthening relationships with trade partners such as the European Union. Over the last decade, the country's exports of organic products have tripled, and now the government is planning to triple them again in five years. Presently, the total cropped area of agricultural land stands at 150.3 million hectares, out of which about 3% is currently yielding from organic farming. Also, 4.7 million hectares of the country’s agricultural land is currently under organic farming, courtesy of nearly 2.4 million farmers.
Another initiative undertaken by the government is the development of credibility using robust certification procedures and the expansion of cooperatives that unite farmers to enhance production. The government claims that the country has seen the effectiveness of the longstanding National Programme for Organic Production, implemented, in fulfilling the requirement of matching domestic norms with international norms. For instance, during the 2026 Biofach, around 100 exhibitors from 20 Indian states exhibited organic products. This highlighted the country's position as a trusted supply source for both national and international markets. As the requirement for environmentally friendly food products rises globally, the country is looking to enhance supply chains and increase the level of trust in the overall process of certification and accessibility to markets. Organic farming will emerge as a potentially important export sector for the country.
