In light of China's aggressive actions in the Indo-Pacific, India and Japan agreed to intensify military drills and defence cooperation. The two nations also emphasised the critical role that their bilateral special strategic and global partnership plays in ensuring a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
On the first day of his official visit to Japan, Minister of Defence, Mr. Rajnath Singh visited his Japanese counterpart, Mr. Yasukazu Hamada. The two leaders discussed a range of topics related to bilateral defence cooperation and regional affairs. They also agreed to conduct military exercises to improve coordination between the two countries air forces.
The need to ensure a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific has come up in discussions between India, the US, and a number of other world powers against the backdrop of China's expanding military manoeuvring in the area.
