Union Finance Minister, Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman, met Jordan's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Ms. Zeina Zeid Toukan, on September 28, 2026, on the sidelines of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) 2026 Annual Meeting in Doha, Qatar. The two ministers discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly in food security, fertilisers, trade and investment. Ms. Sitharaman noted that India is Jordan's fourth-largest trading partner and highlighted the target of increasing bilateral trade to Rs. 0.47 lakh crore (US$ 5 billion) by 2030. The discussions come as both countries seek to expand economic engagement across sectors and strengthen opportunities for trade and investment.
The meeting also covered Jordan's interest in greater cooperation with India in fertilisers, energy, water and infrastructure, along with increased investment opportunities. According to the Ministry of Finance, Ms. Toukan described India as a critical market for Jordan and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation across these areas. Food security and fertilisers were also discussed as key areas of mutual interest, alongside broader opportunities in trade and investment. The two countries have been expanding their economic partnership beyond trade, with cooperation extending to energy, water and infrastructure. Greater investment opportunities in Jordan were also discussed during the meeting. The engagement at the AIIB Annual Meeting reflects efforts by India and Jordan to identify new areas of economic cooperation and strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties, with the Rs. 0.47 lakh crore (US$ 5 billion) bilateral trade target by 2030 underscoring the two countries' efforts to expand commercial engagement.
