India has launched the world’s first global clinical study to scientifically assess the integration of Ayurveda with conventional tuberculosis treatment, marking a significant milestone towards the goal of creating a tuberculosis-free nation. The initiative was announced on World Tuberculosis Day, signifying the integration of modern biotechnologies and traditional knowledge systems to deliver improved health outcomes to patients through a holistic approach to treatment. The clinical trial aims to scientifically assess the efficacy of Ayurveda as an adjunct to conventional Anti-Tuberculosis Treatment (ATT) by studying key parameters, including nutritional recovery, body weight, disease progression, safety, and quality of life, among others. The initiative will see the participation of more than 1,200 patients at the top medical institutions in the country, signifying the importance of the program.

The initiative is being implemented through a collaborative approach by the Department of Biotechnology and the Ministry of AYUSH, which reflects a “whole of government” and “whole of science” approach to healthcare innovation. Advanced tools such as immune profiling, metabolomics, MRI, and genomic studies will be used to assess the impact of integrative therapy on treatment outcomes. India has already registered a decline of 21% in TB incidence since 2015. Although this is a positive step toward achieving the goal of TB Elimination through the National TB Elimination Programme, several issues, such as the occurrence of drug resistance, undernutrition, and health complications, still need to be addressed. The incorporation of Ayurveda is expected to address this issue by promoting patient recovery, improving immunity, and improving patient well-being. This will also make India a global leader in the evidence-based integration of traditional medicine and modern healthcare systems.
