The US retail giant, Walmart is the owner of PhonePe, a fintech company, and Flipkart, an online retailer. At the Raymond James 44th Annual Institutional Investors Conference, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Mr. John David Rainey stated that India is likely to surpass China and emerge as the largest international market for Walmart. He claims that a significant amount of the market share is held by both China and India. And he predicts that India will surpass China to become the world's biggest market this year. The prospects for this possibility are very bright. According to a BCG-RAI analysis, the country's retail sector is predicted to grow by 10% annually to reach US$ 2 trillion by 2032. According to the experts, the industry is "on the cusp" of seeing advancements in both physical and e-commerce through the employment of new cutting-edge technologies. In India, Amazon, Meesho, Reliance's JioMart, and Tata Group are competitors of Walmart-owned Flipkart.
Since opening a hypermarket and Sam's Club in Shenzhen in 1996, Walmart has led the way in modernising Chinese retail. Being a pioneer in omnichannel retail, it provides services to localities around the country. Customers can access its services through roughly 400 retail establishments, clubs, and e-commerce platforms. 99.9% of the workforce is made up of Chinese employees. The Flipkart Group purchased the PhonePe Group in 2016, making it the largest digital payments platform in India. More than 440 million users have signed up with the business. The full ownership separation of the digital payments platform was announced by e-commerce behemoth Flipkart and PhonePe, allowing the two companies to forge their own futures and unleashing enterprise value for shareholders. The split between PhonePe and the Flipkart Group was also referenced in Walmart's financial results. This resulted in a 262-basis point rise in operational costs (bps). Also, for sale events, Walmart International's gross profit rate climbed by 52 bps. This includes BigBillionDays, Flipkart's signature Diwali sale.
