India and Mauritius have strengthened bilateral ties by signing seven memorandums of understanding (MoUs) across sectors, including education, health, energy, science, technology, space, and public service training. Key agreements cover cooperation between India’s Department of Science & Technology and Mauritius’ Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, oceanography collaboration between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-National Institute of Oceanography and Mauritius Oceanography Institute, and hydrography surveys of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). India will support a 17.5 megawatt (MW) floating solar photovoltaic project at Tamarind Falls and provide 100 electric buses to assist Mauritius’s energy transition, of which 10 have already been delivered.
Capacity-building and education initiatives include training over 5,000 Mauritian citizens in India, establishing a Directorate of Science and Technology, and launching Mission Karmayogi training modules. Agreements with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, and the University of Mauritius will advance research, education, and innovation. Healthcare and infrastructure support encompasses the first Jan Aushadhi Kendra outside India, an AYUSH Centre of Excellence, a veterinary school with an animal hospital, and projects such as the Chagos Marine Protected Area, a new Air Traffic Control tower at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport, and the expansion of highways and the ring road. Digital and financial cooperation will also grow, leveraging the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and RuPay cards to enable trade in local currencies, further enhancing India-Mauritius economic and technological collaboration.
