India-Namibia sign an MoU on wildlife conservation and sustainable biodiversity utilization

India and Namibia have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on wildlife conservation and sustainable biodiversity utilization on July 20, 2022, for establishing the cheetah into the historical range in India.

The MoU facilitates the development of a relationship that is beneficial to both India and Namibia in order to promote wildlife conservation and sustainable biodiversity exploitation.

The MoU's primary focus areas are:

  • Conservation of biodiversity, with a focus on preserving and reintroducing cheetahs to their old range areas where they once existed.
  • Sharing and exchanging skills and resources to advance cheetah conservation in the two countries.
  • Wildlife conservation and sustainable biodiversity utilization by sharing good practices in technological applications, mechanisms of livelihood generation for local communities living in wildlife habitats, and sustainable management of biodiversity.
  • Staff exchanges for education and training in wildlife management, including the sharing of technological know-how.
  • Collaboration in environmental governance, pollution and waste management, environmental impact assessments, and other areas of shared interest.

As per the directions of the Supreme Court of India in 2020, the cheetah reintroduction project in India is being overseen by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), guided and directed by the committee of experts designated by the Supreme Court of India.
