India is nearing self-reliance in strategic application data, largely due to Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), a satellite navigation system akin to GPS. Speaking at the GeoSmart India 2024 conference in Hyderabad, In-SPACe Chairperson Mr. Pawan Goenka highlighted the importance of self-reliance in navigation systems, especially for defence, civilian, and industrial needs, to mitigate risks from potential supply disruptions. While NavIC will coexist with systems like GPS, he emphasised India’s ability to fulfil its requirements independently. NavIC, developed by ISRO, covers India and a 1,500-km surrounding region, providing accurate location and time data.

On communication satellites, he noted India’s increasing reliance on indigenous satellites, facilitated by ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). However, he stressed the need for a steady supply to reduce dependency on foreign satellites further. Chairperson of the Geospatial Data Promotion and Development Committee (GDPDC), Mr. Srikant Sastri, highlighted the need for India to dominate critical technologies in strategic areas such as civil aviation and mapping. GDPDC plans to launch centres of excellence in FY24 to advance work in six identified priority sectors.
