India now ranks among top six nations globally in 6G patent filings: Minister of State, Telecom

India has funded over 111 research projects with a sanction of Rs. 300 crore (US$ 35.14 million), marking significant progress in pursuing 6G technology. The country now ranks among the top six globally in 6G patent filings, as Minister of State for Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani stated at the BHARAT 6G 2025 conference. He highlighted that 6G will operate on TeraHertz frequency bands, enabling data rates up to one terabit per second, 100 times faster than 5G.
He emphasised that with India's vast talent pool and adequate time to develop the technology, there is no reason the country should not lead in 6G. The adoption of 6G is expected to create entirely new industries and revolutionize existing ones, potentially contributing Rs. 85,37,000 crore (US$ 1 trillion) to India's economy by 2035. He also noted that indigenous 6G development will ensure secure communications, developed and managed within India, further strengthening the nation's position in the global technology landscape.
