India plans ‘Made in India’ brand scheme, targets gaps in domestic manufacturing

India is preparing to launch a new ‘Made in India Brand Scheme’ to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports across key sectors. The initiative, announced by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Secretary Mr. Amardeep Singh Bhatia at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Business Summit 2026, aims to identify nearly 100 products that are either not manufactured in India or are being produced in insufficient quantities. The government has already shortlisted several “unique and interesting” products, including automobile axles and motorcycle components, to scale up manufacturing for both domestic and global markets. The scheme is expected to create a strong quality-backed identity for Indian products while enhancing the country’s manufacturing competitiveness.

The proposed scheme will introduce a dedicated logo and branding mechanism to certify value addition and ensure quality standards in Indian-made products. Officials stated that a pilot run in the steel sector delivered encouraging results, prompting plans for a wider rollout across industries after consultations with stakeholders. The government is also encouraging businesses to make long-term investments in India and leverage opportunities arising from recently concluded free trade agreements (FTAs). Additionally, policymakers highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in improving manufacturing productivity and innovation, signalling a push towards technologically advanced industrial growth. The initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of building resilient supply chains, boosting exports and positioning the country as a major global manufacturing hub.
