India’s rice production in the 2025 kharif season is estimated at a record 124.50 million tonnes (MT), marking an increase of 1.73 MT over the 2024 kharif season, according to the first advance estimate for the crop year 2025-26. Overall, kharif foodgrains output is projected at 173.33 MT, around 3.90 MT higher than the previous season. Sowing typically begins in June with the onset of the monsoon, and harvesting starts from October. Maize production is estimated at 28.30 MT, up by about 3.50 MT compared to last year, reflecting favourable monsoon conditions across most regions despite localised damage from excessive rainfall.
Other crops present a mixed picture. Total kharif pulses production is projected at 7.41 MT, marginally lower than 7.73 MT in the previous season. In comparison, kharif oilseeds output is estimated at 27.56 MT, slightly below last year’s 28.02 MT. Officials stated that these estimates are based on historical yield trends, field observations, and state-level inputs, and will be revised as actual yield data from crop cutting experiments becomes available. The overall outlook indicates stable agricultural performance, supported by improved rainfall distribution and consistent crop growth across key producing regions.
