India Ranks Third Globally in Renewable Energy Installed Capacity, Union Minister Mr. Pralhad Joshi

India has emerged as a global leader in clean energy, securing the third position worldwide in renewable energy installed capacity, surpassing Brazil, as per the Renewable Energy Statistics 2026 released by the International Renewable Energy Agency. The country recorded a total non-fossil fuel capacity of 283.46 GW as of March 31, 2026, with renewable energy alone contributing 274.68 GW. Notably, renewable sources met a record 51.5% of India’s electricity demand in July 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy transition. Overall power generation reached 1,845.921 billion units (BU) during 2025-26, with non-fossil sources contributing 29.2% (538.97 BU), reflecting steady progress towards sustainability goals.

India also achieved a historic milestone of 50% cumulative installed power capacity from non-fossil sources in June 2025, five years ahead of its 2030 target under the Paris Agreement. During 2025-26, the country added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity, driven largely by solar and wind expansion. Solar capacity reached 150.26 GW, while wind energy stood at 56.09 GW, both witnessing substantial growth over the past decade. The government’s policy push, including a reduction in GST on renewable energy equipment from 12% to 5%, has further supported sectoral growth. Additionally, expenditure of Rs. 24,176.68 crore (US$ 2.62 billion) was allocated during 2025-26, reflecting a strong fiscal commitment towards renewable energy expansion and infrastructure development.
