India reaffirmed its commitment to a rule-based, transparent and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system during its eighth Trade Policy Review at the World Trade Organization (WTO), highlighting the country's expanding role in global trade and investment. Addressing the review, Commerce Secretary Mr. Rajesh Agrawal emphasised India's continued engagement with the multilateral trading framework while strengthening economic partnerships through an expanding network of Free Trade Agreements, a liberalised Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regime and sustained cooperation with developing economies. The review provided an opportunity for WTO members to assess India's evolving trade policies and their contribution to a stable, predictable and inclusive global trading environment. India's participation reflects its commitment to strengthening international trade relations while supporting reforms that promote transparency, market access and equitable economic growth.
The Government also highlighted India's emergence as a trusted and reliable global trade partner amid evolving geopolitical dynamics, shifting supply chains and changing international trade policies. Continued efforts to expand bilateral and regional trade agreements are expected to improve market access for Indian businesses, strengthen integration with global value chains and enhance export competitiveness across key sectors. Alongside these initiatives, India's liberalised FDI framework continues to attract global investments, reinforcing the country's position as a preferred investment destination. The review also underscored India's commitment to South-South cooperation, promoting stronger economic and technical collaboration among developing nations to support inclusive growth. By advocating a transparent and rules-based multilateral trading system while expanding global partnerships, India is expected to further strengthen its international trade presence, attract greater investment and reinforce its position as one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.
