India records all-time high rice production of 150.18 million tonnes

India has become the world’s largest rice producer, overtaking China with a record rice output of 150.18 million tonnes, according to Union Agriculture Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan. China’s rice production stood at 145.28 million tonnes, highlighting India’s growing dominance in global agricultural production. The achievement underscores the effectiveness of long-term government initiatives aimed at enhancing farm productivity, expanding access to improved seeds, and strengthening agricultural infrastructure. The announcement comes at a time when the government is preparing contingency measures for the upcoming kharif sowing season amid concerns over climate variability and monsoon-related risks. India’s strong rice production base continues to play a critical role in ensuring domestic food security while supporting millions of farmers across the country.

The milestone also reinforces India’s position as a leading supplier in global rice markets. The government has accelerated the development and distribution of high-yielding and climate-resilient crop varieties through research institutions and agricultural agencies, helping improve productivity and farm resilience. India currently accounts for a significant share of global rice exports and has steadily expanded its presence in international markets. With sustained investments in agricultural innovation, seed technology, and climate adaptation strategies, the country is strengthening its role in global food supply chains. The achievement highlights the transformation of India’s agriculture sector into a major contributor to economic growth, export competitiveness, and long-term food security, while showcasing the increasing global relevance of Indian farming and agri-technology capabilities.
