India-Russia parliamentary ties set to deepen through renewed dialogue and cooperation

India-Russia parliamentary ties are set to deepen through renewed dialogue and cooperation, following a meeting between Lok Sabha Speaker Mr. Om Birla and a Russian parliamentary delegation led by First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Mr. Vladimir Yakushev. The discussions highlighted the long-standing and time-tested partnership between India and Russia, rooted in mutual trust and shared strategic interests. The statement further emphasised that continued engagement between Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and President of Russia Mr. Vladimir Putin has further strengthened bilateral relations and opened new avenues of cooperation. Both sides underlined the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and collaboration across global platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, BRICS Parliamentary Forum, and G20 to address shared global challenges.

The interaction also underscored strong cooperation in key sectors such as defence, trade and economic engagement, while identifying emerging areas like space research, artificial intelligence and clean energy as future growth drivers. Cultural and people-to-people ties were highlighted as a key pillar of the relationship, with over 35,000 Indian students studying in Russia and initiatives such as the ‘Bharat Utsav’ festival strengthening cultural exchange. Both sides stressed the importance of institutional mechanisms like the Inter-Parliamentary Commission and parliamentary friendship groups to enhance cooperation. The formation of the India-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group is expected to further boost engagement. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple dimensions and sustaining high-level parliamentary exchanges.
