According to Ericsson's Mobility Report 2023, India had roughly 10 million 5G subscriptions by the end of 2022 and is expected to have 700 million, or 57% of all mobile subscribers, by the end of 2028. This would make India the fastest-growing 5G region globally.

As per the report, the average monthly data traffic for smartphones is predicted to increase from 26 GB in 2022 to approximately 62 GB in 2028, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16%, while the total monthly data traffic for mobile devices is predicted to increase from 18 EB in 2022 to 58 EB in 2028, growing at a 22% CAGR.

The report further stated that 4G networks will continue to be the dominant subscription type in India, driving connection and fuelling data growth.

In addition, the report predicted that smartphone subscriptions will increase from 840 million at the end of 2022 to 1.14 billion by the end of 2028 at a CAGR of 5%. Smartphone subscriptions will also increase from 76% of all mobile subscriptions in 2022 to 93% in 2028.
