India’s agricultural export basket has expanded significantly over the past decade, growing from around 280 products to nearly 500 products, according to Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Chairman Mr. Abhishek Dev. Stating further, India’s agricultural exports reached approximately Rs. 4.61 lakh crore (US$ 53 billion) in the previous year, helping the country consistently rank among the world’s top ten agricultural exporting nations despite strong competition from major exporters such as the United States, Brazil, China and the European Union. The expansion reflects India’s efforts to diversify its export portfolio, improve market access and strengthen the competitiveness of its agricultural sector in global markets.
India’s agricultural exports have also evolved beyond traditional products such as rice and spices, with growing shipments of value-added and high-demand products including pulses, cocoa products, pineapples, grapes and pomegranates. These products are now reaching consumers across dozens of international markets, highlighting the increasing global acceptance of Indian agricultural produce. The diversification of the export basket is expected to support farmers’ incomes, reduce dependence on a limited set of commodities and strengthen India's position in global agri-trade. Continued focus on quality standards, supply-chain development, market diversification and export promotion initiatives is likely to create new opportunities for agricultural producers and exporters while enhancing the sector’s contribution to economic growth and rural development.
