India is experiencing unprecedented growth in Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption, with momentum having tripled YoY, according to the Managing Director for International Strategy at OpenAI, Mr. Oliver Jay. Speaking at CNBC-TV18’s Global Leadership Summit 2025, Mr. Oliver Jay credited India’s young and tech-savvy population as a key driver of this rapid expansion. He highlighted that India’s developers and businesses are actively deploying frontier AI technologies, inspiring product innovations such as the study mode in ChatGPT, which was developed based on Indian student usage. OpenAI’s decision to make ChatGPT Go free in India, he added, aims to enhance accessibility and affordability for users across the country.
He praised India’s exceptional engineering talent, noting that the country’s demographic advantage, particularly the 18-24 age group, is fuelling next-generation AI adoption. He emphasised that “if you build for India, you can build for the world”, underlining India’s strategic importance in the global AI ecosystem. He also expressed optimism about AI’s transformative potential across sectors and OpenAI’s growing collaboration with Indian enterprises and policymakers. To further strengthen its presence, OpenAI is set to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year. With India emerging as ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing markets after the United States, he reaffirmed OpenAI’s commitment to supporting India’s expanding AI ecosystem and fostering innovation-led growth.
