India is poised to become a global leader in AI and deep tech fields due to its unique superiority in data and big data, according to former World Economic Forum (WEF) MD Mr. Claude Smadja. Speaking at IGIC 2025, he highlighted that India's unparalleled capacity for data collection and utilisation could accelerate technological innovation and potentially deliver the world's next big surprise. He contrasted India with major world economies, noting that the US is losing momentum. At the same time, China has overcome its structural challenges. With the right global conditions, he asserted that India must seize this critical juncture to assert its leadership ambitions in technology.
Drawing on his 53 years of engagement with India, he described the country's journey as a "roller coaster" of hope and setbacks. Often derailed from economic growth by distractions, India now stands at an inflection point in its domestic evolution and global context. It must accelerate the momentum of the technology catching-up process to assert its role as the new global hub for technological innovation and entrepreneurship. The fourth edition of India Global Innovation Connect (IGIC), held in Bengaluru on June 4-5, 2025, brought together global industry leaders from the US, Japan, Korea, Germany, Singapore, Israel, Switzerland, France, and the UAE, among other countries.
