India’s bioeconomy is projected to expand to Rs. 28.50 lakh crore (US$ 300 billion) by 2030, reinforcing the country’s emergence as a global biotechnology hub, according to Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh. Speaking at the launch of the roadmap ‘Building India as a Leading Bioeconomy Powerhouse by 2035’ in New Delhi, the Minister highlighted that India’s bioeconomy has grown nearly twenty-fold from US$ 10 billion in 2014 to around Rs. 18.50 lakh crore (US$ 195 billion). He noted that a robust bioeconomy will strengthen healthcare, food security, vaccine development and innovation while generating high-skilled employment and supporting the Government’s Vocal for Local initiative.

The Minister also highlighted that India is among the few countries with a dedicated biotechnology policy through BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment), which aims to accelerate research, innovation and commercialisation across the biotechnology value chain. The roadmap envisions strengthening India's capabilities in biomanufacturing, bio-based products and advanced biotechnology solutions, positioning the country as a leading global bioeconomy by 2035. The continued expansion of the sector is expected to enhance India's competitiveness in life sciences, promote sustainable industrial development and create new opportunities across healthcare, agriculture and environmental technologies.
