India’s indigenous bullet train is expected to begin testing by May or June 2027, with commercial operations targeted by the end of 2027, according to Union Railway Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw. The first body frame of the bullet train has recently been completed and sent for a squeeze test, marking an important milestone in the development of the project. The testing phase is expected to continue for approximately two to four months, following which the train is expected to be inaugurated. Developed in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the high-speed rail project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between major cities. The proposed journey between Vadodara and Mumbai is expected to take around one and a half hours, substantially reducing travel time. Construction work on the project is progressing across multiple sections, with the Surat-Vapi section expected to be completed by December 2026.
The development of the bullet train forms part of India's broader railway modernisation and infrastructure expansion efforts. Indian Railways is undertaking reforms across operating and reservation systems, construction practices and freight transportation infrastructure. New wagon designs are also being introduced to support specialised freight requirements, including the transportation of commodities such as salt. Railway infrastructure development has continued with the redevelopment of 280 railway stations and the construction of approximately 36,000 km of new railway tracks. Major long-pending projects, including the Chenab Bridge and the railway connectivity project linking Mizoram to the national railway network, have also been completed. Cargo trains incorporating Vande Bharat technology are additionally under development, reflecting efforts to modernise freight transportation. The planned introduction of India's bullet train and the wider expansion of railway infrastructure are expected to strengthen passenger connectivity, improve logistics efficiency and support the development of a modern and technologically advanced railway network.
