India’s copper demand increased by 12% year-on-year to 2,100 kilotons (KT) in FY26, up from 1,878 KT in FY25, according to data released by the International Copper Association India (ICA India). The growth outpaced India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 7.7% during the period and accelerated from the 9.3% increase recorded in FY25. Strong activity across infrastructure, automotive, and building and construction supported the rise in consumption. Copper is widely used in wires and cables, transformers, motors, automotive harnesses, and various electrical and industrial components. Infrastructure was the primary driver of additional demand in FY26, recording 29% year-on-year growth and accounting for 22% of total domestic copper consumption.
The automotive sector recorded a 14% increase in copper demand, supported by higher sales of passenger cars, commercial vehicles and tractors, following a sluggish period in FY25. Building and construction, which accounted for around one-quarter of national copper demand, registered 9% growth during FY26. Demand for power cables, building wire, household accessories and construction hardware was supported by urbanization, commercial real estate developments and premium residential projects. Meanwhile, data centre installations remained at an early stage, accounting for less than 1% of total copper demand. According to Mr. Mayur Karmarkar, Managing Director of ICA India, favourable policies promoting investment in infrastructure, industrialization and the clean energy transition are expected to continue driving copper demand. ICA India is the local arm of the International Copper Association Ltd., a non-profit organization established in 1959 under the Copper Alliance to advocate for global copper usage.
