India’s defence sector has undergone a major transformation over the last decade, driven by indigenous innovation, technology adoption and greater private sector participation. Addressing the North Tech Symposium 2026 in Prayagraj, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that India’s defence production has reached Rs. 1.54 lakh crore (US$ 16.45 billion), registering a 174% increase in the past ten years. Defence exports have also witnessed remarkable growth, rising 34-fold to Rs. 23,622 crore (US$ 2.52 billion), signalling India’s emergence as a key exporter of defence equipment. The statement further emphasised that the country is steadily transitioning from being one of the world’s largest defence importers to a strong global manufacturing and export hub.
The statement noted that the private sector has become an important contributor to India’s defence ecosystem, accounting for nearly Rs. 15,000 crore (US$ 1.60 billion) of total defence exports. It further elaborated that policy reforms, enhanced industry collaboration and government support have accelerated domestic manufacturing and innovation in advanced defence technologies. The Union Budget 2026-27 has allocated Rs. 6.81 lakh crore (US$ 72.73 billion) for defence, marking a 9.5% increase over the previous year. The statement also underscored that India has entered a significant phase where advanced technologies, automated platforms and real-time data systems are redefining modern warfare capabilities and strengthening national security preparedness.
