India’s engineering services exports have expanded nearly eightfold over the past decade to Rs. 1.32 lakh crore (US$ 13.8 billion), underscoring the country’s growing role in global engineering, research and development and technology-enabled services. The expansion reflects India’s established capabilities in engineering design, product development, research and development and other specialised technical services, supported by a large pool of skilled professionals and the wider growth of the country’s services economy. Engineering services have increasingly become an important component of India’s export ecosystem, with Indian companies supporting global businesses across sectors including automotive, aerospace, industrial manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications and technology. The growth also reflects the increasing global adoption of India as a destination for high-value engineering and technology work, moving beyond traditional cost-based outsourcing towards specialised and knowledge-intensive services.

The expansion of engineering services exports provides opportunities for India to strengthen its position in global value chains and capture a larger share of high-value services trade. Increasing demand for product engineering, digital engineering, embedded systems, simulation, testing, research and development and engineering design is creating opportunities for Indian service providers to work with global manufacturers and technology companies. India’s broader strengths in information technology, digital infrastructure and technical talent further support the development of this segment. Engineering and R&D services have also emerged as an important part of India’s services export capabilities, complementing software and business-process services. Continued investment in advanced technologies, specialised skills, innovation and industry-academia collaboration can help Indian companies move further up the value chain and expand into emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, automation, electric mobility, semiconductor design and advanced manufacturing. The sustained growth of engineering services exports can therefore contribute to higher-value exports, employment generation and India’s integration into global technology and manufacturing ecosystems.
