India’s electric vehicle (EV) market recorded its highest-ever monthly retail sales in September 2026, with total sales reaching 3,33,634 units, registering a 74% year-on-year increase, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). EV penetration across vehicle categories also increased to around 13% in September, compared with approximately 10% during the same month last year. The record performance was driven by strong demand across mass-market segments, particularly electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles, both of which recorded their highest ever monthly sales. FADA President Mr. Sai Giridhar attributed the growth to festive demand, improving running-cost economics, a wider choice of models and sustained policy support through PM E-DRIVE and state-level schemes.

Electric two-wheeler retail sales surged 88.67% year-on-year and 13.16% month-on-month to a record 2,07,314 units in September, taking EV penetration in the segment to 11.6% from 8.2% a year earlier. Electric passenger vehicle retail sales also reached a record 36,108 units, registering 94.56% year-on-year and 17.63% month-on-month growth, while penetration increased to 8.5% from 5.7%. Electric three-wheeler retail sales rose 40% year-on-year and 7.74% month-on-month to 86,024 units, with EV penetration remaining strong at 64.9%. Electric commercial vehicle retail sales stood at 4,188 units, more than doubling year-on-year with 158% growth, despite declining 10.9% month-on-month. EV penetration in the segment rose to around 4% from 2.16% a year earlier.
