India's First Direct Commercial Container Freight Train Reaches Nepal, Opening a New Chapter in Cross-border Trade and Connectivity

Indian Railways has launched the first-ever direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal, marking a major milestone in strengthening cross-border rail connectivity and regional trade. The 40-wagon freight train, carrying a consignment of canola, successfully completed its journey under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol, enabling the direct movement of containerised cargo without transshipment at the border. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce transit time, logistics costs and cargo handling while improving the efficiency, reliability and competitiveness of bilateral trade. The milestone builds on the Jogbani-Biratnagar broad-gauge rail link, inaugurated in June 2023, and follows the signing of the revised Letter of Exchange in November 2025, which paved the way for direct commercial rail operations between the two countries.

The new freight service is expected to accelerate the movement of import and export cargo by providing a faster, more economical and environmentally sustainable mode of transportation for exporters, importers and logistics operators. By reducing multiple handling points and streamlining supply chains, the initiative will strengthen trade facilitation, lower logistics costs and improve cargo reliability across the India-Nepal corridor. The achievement also reflects Indian Railways continued focus on expanding international rail connectivity, enhancing freight infrastructure and supporting the Government's vision of improving ease of doing business through modern transport networks. As rail-based freight movement continues to grow, the initiative is expected to deepen economic cooperation between India and Nepal, strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to more efficient and sustainable cross-border trade.
