India’s Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology-enabled Services (ITeS) sector is increasingly integrating flexible staffing as a key workforce strategy. According to Careernet’s report titled The Rise of Flexi Staffing: Outlook for India’s IT/ITeS Talent Landscape, the country’s gig economy is expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% and is projected to reach 9,00,000 professionals by 2030. At present, 3,90,000 flexi workers are employed in the IT/ITeS space, representing around 7% of the sector’s 5.8 million professionals. This shift is supported by digital transformation and global economic dynamics, with companies favouring models that offer speed, specialisation, and scalability. The report is based on real-time hiring data, market research, and ongoing industry trends.
Chief Business Officer at Careernet, Mr. Neelabh Shukla, highlighted that India’s status as a global offshoring hub is fuelling the demand for flexi talent. For professionals, particularly millennials and Gen Z, flexible roles support skill-building, career exploration, and work-life balance. Bengaluru leads the flexi hiring trend, accounting for 25% of the IT/ITeS flexi workforce, followed by Hyderabad at 15%. Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai each contribute approximately 10%. Additionally, tier II and III cities are gaining traction, now making up 20% of the workforce, driven by access to local talent and more cost-effective business models. This decentralisation is enabling firms to grow without the burden of high infrastructure and real estate costs, marking a structural realignment in workforce planning across the industry.
