India’s Metro Network Expands from 248 km in 2014 to Nearly 1,200 km Across 26 Cities: Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi highlighted the significant expansion of India’s Metro network. The country had just 248 kilometres (km) of Metro lines across five cities in 2014, compared with nearly 1,200 km across 26 cities today. This represents an almost five-fold increase in network length, while the number of cities served by Metro services has risen more than five times. In a post on X on November 5, 2026, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi stated that over one crore people now travel by Metro every day, reflecting the growing role of Metro rail in urban mobility.

The impact of this expansion goes beyond numbers. It is translating into less time spent in traffic, more time with family, greater productivity and better opportunities for citizens. Cities such as Pune, which now have Metro connectivity, show how faster network expansion is improving urban transport. This transformation reflects the Government’s focus on urban India, with Metro systems emerging as a key pillar of efficient and modern public transport across the country’s growing cities.
