India’s oil meal exports to China have shown significant growth in the period from April to February in FY26, with a surge in exports to almost 20 times, reaching 7.79 lakh tonnes from just 38,240 tonnes in the corresponding period in FY25, as reported by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA). The rise in exports was mainly due to increased demand for rapeseed meal, which accounted for almost all exports, totalling 7.71 lakh tonnes, along with 7,581 tonnes of castor seed meal. This reflects a shift in China’s sourcing strategy, with India becoming a competitive supplier in the global oil meal market. According to SEA, the major cause for such growth was the competitive prices of oil meal supplied by India in comparison to European suppliers.
The competitive prices of oilmeal supplied from India in comparison to European counterparts make them more attractive to Chinese buyers. This is a positive indication of India’s growth in agricultural exports. However, the overall outlook for oilmeal exports is dependent on certain factors due to current global uncertainties. Despite all these factors, the high growth in oilmeal exports to China is a positive indication of opportunities for India to further increase its presence in agricultural exports.
