India’s pharmaceutical exports grew nearly 5% to Rs. 1.53 lakh crore (US$ 16.13 billion) in the first half of FY27, according to data released by the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil). Growth was driven by strong demand from Europe, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Latin America. In the second quarter of FY27, outbound shipments increased 3.05% to Rs. 76,145.73 crore (US$ 8.04 billion). September recorded the highest monthly export value of Rs. 25,988.52 crore (US$ 2.74 billion), up 4.68% year-on-year (YoY). Exports to Europe rose 9.66% to Rs. 31,142.75 crore (US$ 3.29 billion), accounting for 20.38% of total pharmaceutical exports. Shipments to the ASEAN region grew 21.54%, Latin America and the Caribbean rose 16.58%, and Africa increased 6.48%, helping sustain overall export growth.
Drug formulations and biologicals remained the largest export segment, accounting for 73.84% of total shipments and growing 3.81%. Bulk drugs and drug intermediates rose 12.07%, and surgical exports climbed 9.53%. Chairman of Pharmexcil Mr. Namit Joshi stated that India has established a global reputation for quality, affordable medicines and large-scale manufacturing, and that the next phase of growth must focus on moving up the value chain. Europe presents significant opportunities for the co-development of complex generics, biosimilars and specialised therapies. Vice Chairman of Pharmexcil Mr. Bhavin Mehta noted that double-digit growth in bulk drugs and intermediates reflects the breadth of domestic manufacturing capabilities. Continued investment in quality systems will support greater global participation by Indian exporters.
