In August of this year, the country’s power consumption increased by almost 16% to 151.66 billion units (BU) compared to August 2022, primarily as a result of increased usage of cooling appliances during hot weather. Data from the government shows that during the same time-period last year, power consumption stood at 130.39 BU, up from 127.88 BU in August 2021.
In August 2023, the peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, increased to 236.59 gigawatts (GW). In August 2022 and August 2021, the peak power supply was 195.22 GW and 196.27 GW, respectively.
The country's summer season power demand was predicted by the power ministry to reach 229 GW.
Due to unusually heavy rainfall, the demand in April-July of this year did not reach the anticipated level. However, in June, the peak supply reached a new high of 223.29 GW. According to industry experts, this year's heavy rains in March, April, May, and June had an impact on power consumption. Further, the high humidity in August and the increase in industrial activity ahead of the festival season were the main causes reasons for the increase in power demand and consumption. The peak power supply reached a record high of 239.97 GW on September 1, 2023, surpassing its previous high of 236.59 GW in August.
