India's power consumption increased by 5.14% to 125.44 billion units (BU) in November FY24, compared to the same month in FY23. According to government data, power consumption in November FY23 stood at 119.30 gigawatt (GW). The peak power demand also saw a slight rise, reaching 207.42 GW in November FY24, up from 204.56 GW in November FY23. The all-time high for peak power demand was recorded at approximately 250 GW in May FY24, surpassing the previous 243.27 GW in September FY23. The power ministry had earlier projected a peak power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW during the evening in May, with an estimate of 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening for June. It was anticipated that peak power demand could rise to 260 GW during summer.
Experts noted that November FY24 was the warmest in the last four to five years, which likely contributed to the subdued power demand and consumption growth. The slower onset of winter, particularly in northern India, dampened the need for heating appliances such as geysers and heaters. Despite this, they expect demand and consumption to remain steady in the coming days, driven by strong commercial and industrial activity and a temperature decline.
