India’s renewable energy sector posted record-breaking growth in the H1 2025, adding 22 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, up 56% YoY, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority. This surge has pushed the country’s total clean energy capacity, including large hydropower and nuclear, above that of fossil fuels for the first time. The development marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. This goal had been met with scepticism due to past delays in project execution. The accelerated pace in H1 indicates renewed investor interest and stronger policy implementation, setting the stage for India to meet its clean energy commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The record addition of renewable capacity underscores India’s growing stature as a global clean energy leader. Backed by favourable policy measures, improved investor confidence, and expanding domestic manufacturing, the country is steadily building a future-ready power ecosystem. This shift also aligns with India’s larger energy security vision, reducing import dependence, decentralising generation, and supporting economic growth through green jobs. As large-scale solar, wind, and hydropower projects gain traction alongside pilot storage deployments, India is proving that clean growth and development can go hand in hand. The momentum offers a solid foundation for achieving the 2030 target, further cementing India’s role as a key player in global climate action.
