India's Renewable Energy Capacity Reaches 288.58 GW

India's renewable energy sector has recorded remarkable growth over the past decade, with installed renewable energy capacity increasing nearly fourfold from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 288.58 GW as of 30 June 2026, reinforcing the country's leadership in the global clean energy transition. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Mr. Shripad Yesso Naik stated that solar power accounts for the largest share of installed renewable capacity at 162.15 GW, followed by wind power (57.44 GW), hydropower (57.24 GW) and bio power (11.75 GW). Including 8.78 GW of nuclear capacity, India's total installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity has reached 297.36 GW, reflecting sustained progress towards achieving the country's clean energy and climate commitments while strengthening long-term energy security.

The sector has also witnessed significant investment momentum, attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) worth Rs. 4.30 lakh crore (US$ 45.72 billion) between FY14 and FY26. During the same period, domestic financial institutions, including 12 public sector banks, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, the Power Finance Corporation, the Rural Electrification Corporation, the India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited, the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development and the Small Industries Development Bank of India, collectively deployed Rs. 12.32 lakh crore (US$ 131.06 billion) towards renewable energy projects. Continued public and private investment is expected to accelerate renewable energy deployment, strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract global capital and reinforce India's position as one of the world's fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
