The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), on behalf of River Cities Alliance (RCA), has signed a Memorandum of Common Purpose (MoCP) with the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI), representing 124 cities/towns along the banks of the Mississippi River in the USA. The signing ceremony occurred at the Rotary Hall during the ongoing COP28 or United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The MoCP was signed by DG of NMCG, Mr. G. Asok Kumar, Mayor of La Crosse (Wisconsin), Mr. Mitch Reynolds, Mayor of Greenville (Mississippi), Mr. Errick Simmons, Mayor of New Orleans (Louisiana), Ms. LaToya Cantrell, and Executive Director of MRCTI Mr. Colin Wellemkamp.
The signing of the MoCP brings NMCG closer to launching the Global River Cities Alliance (GRCA), expanding the membership to 267 global river cities, including India, USA, and Denmark. The GRCA will officially launch on December 10, 2023, with more cities expected to join.
The MoCP focuses on collaboration between RCA and MRCTI, aiming to address climate change impacts on river ecosystems through capacity building, knowledge exchange, and comprehensive water monitoring. It also promotes renaturing urban areas, restoring aquatic ecosystems, and emphasising the importance of green spaces. City twinning and a proposed visit of MRCTI mayors to India further strengthen the partnership.
