The Australian government focuses to entice overseas students back to its shores, the percentage of Indian students studying in Australia has increased from 17% in 2019 to 23% in 2019. Ms. Monica Kennedy, Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner, Australian Trade and Investment Commission, stated that Indian students now constituted the highest proportion of foreign students in 2022 when discussing the range of support initiatives taken by the Australian Government for international students.

According to her, between November 22nd, 2021, when the Australian government stated that the border will open to students, and March 18th, 2022, Indian citizens applied for 28,785 student visas. With February being one of the earliest admission seasons of the year for Australian institutions, the country has seen a boom in applications, with 15,310 visas issued between November 22nd and March 18th, 2022, with over 25,000 students coming to Australia’s shores to begin or resume their studies.

The Australian government has increased the period of post-study work visas from two to three years. Furthermore, employment limitations for international student visa holders have been temporarily relaxed, meaning that there is currently no limit on the number of hours students can work while studying in Australia. For Masters by Coursework graduates, the period of stay for Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) holders has been increased from two to three years, reflecting the existing regulations for Masters by Research graduates. Graduates of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector will also be eligible for a two-year Temporary Graduate visa.
