India’s solar capacity rises to nearly 165 GW as PM Surya Ghar empowers over 51 lakh families

India's solar revolution has transformed from a state-level initiative in Gujarat into a massive national movement, driving economic growth, energy self-reliance and clean power, with installed solar capacity rising from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to nearly 165 GW by mid-2026. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi's vision of Jan Seva Se Desh Seva, guided by Seva and Sushasan, has continued to shape the Government's efforts towards a Viksit Bharat by 2047, with the solar sector emerging as a key example of this transformation. Taking solar power directly to households, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has empowered over 51 lakh families and commissioned 14.8 GW of rooftop solar installations across the country, providing zero electricity bills to millions while generating lakhs of local employment opportunities.
Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi highlighted the scheme's transformative impact on ground-level entrepreneurship and skills, sharing the journey of a beneficiary from Gujarat, where the initiative has fostered local clean-energy technicians and entrepreneurs alongside bringing financial relief to households. Mr. Dinesh Bhai Makwana, a resident of Surendranagar, Gujarat, shared how the scheme has directly benefited his family through reduced electricity costs. Gujarat today stands as one of the leading states in solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, reflecting the state's continued leadership in India's clean energy journey.
