India's sugar output increased by 4%, to touch 15.7 million tonnes

As per an industry body, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the sugar production of India registered an increase of about 4% since the ongoing season began in October 2022 and around 15.7 million tonnes of sugar have been produced as of January 15. In the same period last year, the production stood at about 15.1 million tonnes.

Between the aforementioned period, 515 sugar mills were operational in the country as against 507 mills a year ago. Additionally, the Indian mill exported an all-time high of more than 11 million tonnes of sugar in the 2021-22 season.

India is the world’s biggest producer of sugar and the second biggest exporter, and Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has allowed overseas shipments of 6 million tonnes of sugar during the current 2022-23 marketing season.
