According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the sugar production of India rose by 3.69% to 12.07 million tonnes during the October-December quarter of the current year. In the same period last year, it stood at 11.64 million tonnes. This year, around 509 mills have been operating, while the number of mills operating in the said period last year was 500.
The production in Uttar Pradesh has reached the level of the previous year, i.e., 3.09 million tonnes, whereas in Maharashtra it jumped to 4.68 million tonnes during the October-December period, from 4.58 million tonnes in the previous year period. An increment was also seen in Karnataka’s sugar production as it slightly rose to 2.67 million tonnes. ISMA also informed that the production of sugar has reached 3.8 lakh tonnes in Gujarat, 2.6 lakh tonnes in Tamil Nadu, and in other states, it stood at 9.9 lakh tonnes during the said period. The sugar production of 365 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 marketing year has been projected by ISMA.
