According to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on October 9, India's urban unemployment rate decreased from 6.8% in January-March to 6.6% in the first quarter of 2023-24.
With 6.6%, the government's Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which was first conducted in 2018-19, has recorded the lowest unemployment rate in Indian cities. For urban statistics, the survey is released every three months and estimates the unemployment rate in terms of Current Weekly Status (CWS). If a person worked for at least an hour on any day during the seven days prior to the day they are surveyed, they are deemed to be employed by this definition.
In the CWS, the unemployment rate for people over the age of 15 ranged from 7.8-9.7% during the pre-pandemic period.
India's urban unemployment rate decreased in April-June despite a rise in the labour force participation rate from 48.5% to 48.8%. In April-June, the male labour force participation rate remained constant at 73.5%, while the female rate increased by 50 basis points to 23.2%.
Both the male and female unemployment rates decreased by 10 basis points to 5.9% and 9.1%, respectively, despite both the male and female labour force participation rates declining.
Female casual workers made up 6.8% of the workforce in April-June, down from 7.3% in the first quarter of 2023. However, the comparable percentage for women in salaried positions fell by 20 basis points to 54.0% at the same time.
In the meantime, the proportion of men working for pay increased by 50 basis points to 47.8%. Additionally, the percentage of women who are self-employed increased by 70 basis points to 39.2%, while the percentage who work as unpaid domestic helpers increased to 11.9%.
