India's wireless subscriber base rises above 1,171 million: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)

India’s total wireless subscriber base, including mobile and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), reached 1,171.91 million in July 2025, up from 1,170.88 million in June 2025, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The rise of 0.09% was primarily led by urban subscriptions, which increased by 3.16 million to 641.03 million, while rural subscriptions contracted by 2.12 million to 530.88 million. Consequently, urban areas accounted for 54.70% of the total base, with rural regions contributing 45.30%. Overall wireless tele-density edged up to 82.75% in July 2025, supported by an improvement in urban tele-density to 125.74%, even as rural tele-density slipped to 58.57%.
Mobile subscriptions (excluding FWA) grew marginally from 1,163.03 million in June 2025 to 1,163.51 million in July 2025, registering a 0.04% rise. Urban mobile users climbed by 2.88 million, while rural mobile subscriptions dropped by 2.39 million, leaving their shares at 54.66% and 45.34%, respectively. Mobile tele-density dipped slightly to 82.16% in July 2025, reflecting contrasting trends across urban and rural regions. During the month, 15.41 million subscribers submitted requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP), underscoring demand for network flexibility. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. maintained its lead with 498.47 million users, followed by Bharti Airtel Ltd. at 307.07 million and Vodafone Idea Ltd. at 127.58 million. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) and Atria Convergence Technologies Ltd. reported subscriber bases of 34.27 million and 2.34 million, respectively. The top five broadband service providers together commanded a 98.48% market share in July 2025.
