India has secured its position among the top 10 global leaders in intellectual property (IP) filings, as highlighted in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024 report. The country recorded the fastest growth in patent applications (+15.7%) in 2023 among the top 20 origins, marking its fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth. India ranks sixth globally for patents, with 64,480 applications, over half of which were filed by residents (55.2%), a first for the country. The patent office granted 149.4% more patents in 2023 than the previous year, reflecting the rapid evolution of India’s IP ecosystem. Additionally, India saw a 36.4% increase in industrial design applications, particularly in textiles, accessories, tools, machines, health, and cosmetics.
India’s strong performance in trademark filings also continued, ranking fourth globally with a 6.1% increase in 2023. Almost 90% of these filings were by residents, with key sectors including health (21.9%), agriculture (15.3%), and clothing (12.8%). The country’s trademark office holds the second-largest number of active registrations globally, with over 3.2 million trademarks in force. The steady rise in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications between 2018 and 2023 reflects India’s growing emphasis on innovation and IP. Moreover, India’s patent-to-GDP ratio increased from 144 to 381 over the past decade, underscoring the link between intellectual property activity and economic growth. WIPO’s findings indicate that India’s advancements in innovation are strongly supported by government initiatives, reinforcing the country’s goal of becoming a global innovation leader.
