India Secures Three Global Codex Standards to Strengthen Spice Exports

India has achieved a major milestone in international food standard-setting with the adoption of three Codex standards for large cardamom, coriander and vanilla at the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) held in Geneva. The standards, developed through the India-hosted Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH), establish harmonised global quality benchmarks that are expected to facilitate smoother international trade, improve market access and enhance the export competitiveness of Indian spices. As one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of large cardamom and coriander, India is well positioned to benefit from greater acceptance of its spice exports in global markets through uniform quality standards.

Further strengthening its leadership in global food governance, India was also appointed Co-Chair of the newly constituted Electronic Working Group (EWG) on risk analysis for new food products under the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The development recognises India's growing technical expertise and active role in shaping international food standards. By promoting science-based food safety standards, fair trade practices and consumer confidence, these achievements are expected to strengthen India's agricultural exports and reinforce its position as a global leader in the spices sector.
