Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Railways, Electronics & IT, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that India's large language model (LLM) is expected to be ready within the next 10 months. The project, part of the India Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mission, focuses on building AI models that reflect the country's cultural and linguistic diversity. The initiative will be supported by the India AI Compute Facility, which has procured 18,693 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to aid in developing this LLM, specifically designed for India. He highlighted the country’s growing AI capabilities, mentioning that India now has 15,000 high-end GPUs, putting the country’s infrastructure on par with global AI benchmarks like ChatGPT, which was trained on 25,000 GPUs.

The shared computing facility, equipped with 18,000 GPUs, has been launched to support startups, researchers, and developers, with around 10,000 GPUs already operational. Major GPU providers for the initiative include Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, Yotta, and NextGen Data Centre. The government has also called for proposals from AI startups, with six developers currently working on models, expected to be ready in four to six months and a maximum timeline of eight to 10 months. He expressed confidence that with algorithmic efficiency, India would have a world-class AI model tailored to the country’s needs in just a few months.
