Mr. Piyush Goyal Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Government of India, said that India should ultimately become the fashion capital of the world and mark its presence globally by having its products displayed alongside prominent fashion houses.
He chaired a meeting earlier this week meeting with designers who discussed how to make India the world's fashion centre while also benefiting the country's craftsmen and weavers. He praised the designers for their unique perspectives and enthusiasm for Indian crafts and emphasised the need of respecting a country's art, craft, culture, history, and legacy. He encouraged the designers to collaborate in order to ensure that everyone of the 75 lakh (7.5 million) recognized craft workers receives an extra Rs 1,000 (US$ 13.24) per month.
He also urged the National Institute of Fashion Technology's (NIFT) complete ecosystem, which includes over 30,000 alumni, to band together to bring about change in the craft industry. "Taking pride is important and without prejudice, one needs to take the ideas forward for the sake of the progress of the nation. Collaboration is the key point and all together can make Indian craft presence felt global, and all will benefit," He said.
