India Strengthens Semiconductor Ecosystem to Address Global Manufacturing Challenges: Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on September 17, highlighting India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem and its efforts to emerge as a trusted manufacturing destination. The global manufacturing landscape is seeking new and trusted destinations, while the growing demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shifting the focus from transistor size towards broader system integration, including memory placement and heat management. India recorded 7.8% economic growth amid a challenging global environment, while its semiconductor ecosystem is expanding rapidly, creating opportunities for innovation, investment and growth. The India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 outlay has been expanded to Rs. 1.28 lakh crore (US$ 13.5 billion) from Rs. 0.76 lakh crore (US$ 8 billion) in the first phase, with 12 semiconductor projects approved.
Young researchers in India and abroad were encouraged to contribute to the development of advanced technologies, while industry leaders were urged to strengthen research and development in the country. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, said the foundation for India’s semiconductor industry has been established, with Semicon 2.0 focusing on semiconductor design, machines and materials, memory, silicon, compound and logic fabrication units, and research and development. The government has also set a target to support at least 200 startups and companies in designing chips in India. SEMICON India 2026 has brought together more than 600 exhibitors, 300 international companies and delegations from over 50 countries. The event, being held from September 17-19, 2026, under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”, features six country pavilions, 12 state government pavilions and a dedicated Startup Pavilion.
